Momentum and demand for IEEE 802.11n wireless technology is growing. A recent report by Dell’Oro Group estimates the total addressable market (TAM) for mesh technology in 2010 will be $70.4 million for North America, $32 million for EMEA, $19.2 for Asia and $8 million for Latin America. With the formal ratification of the 802.11n standard, initial enterprise and municipality deployment models are showing dramatic improvements in network performance and return on investment. According to Gartner, 802.11n will benefit applications requiring high performance as well as address wireless scenarios with a high density of users. 802.11n networks will offer 3G offload capabilities in municipalities and will easily handle the high bandwidth requirements for video surveillance in cities. Gartner also points out that use cases for 802.11n will be driven by peak throughput requirements that already exceed current 802.11a/g bandwidth. To date, 802.11n network technology has been deployed primarily for indoor networks. That trend is changing, however, with customers deploying outdoor 802.11n networks that offer the capability to roam indoors, and indoor networks that can extend to the outdoors. In short, the time to talk to customers about making the “n” investment in the outdoor market is now.
